Three measurements
- WidthBetween the stops, the strips the door closes against. Top, middle and bottom.
- HeightFloor to the underside of the frame, on both sides.
- DepthFront to back of the frame, if you are buying a new door.
Standard door sizes
| Common width | Opening to carry through | Usual height |
|---|---|---|
| 30 in | about 28 in | 80 in (6′ 8″) |
| 32 in | about 30 in | 80 in (6′ 8″) |
| 36 in | about 34 in | 80 in (6′ 8″) |
These are door sizes. The opening you can carry things through is smaller, because of the stops and the door itself when it is open.

Questions
Do I measure the frame or the opening?
The opening between the stops. That is what things have to pass through.
Why measure three times?
Old frames are rarely square. The smallest number is the one that matters.
What about double doors?
Measure with both doors open, between the inside edges.
